Not too far from Tynemouth is this stunning seaside town located on the North banks of the River Tyne. Whitley Bay is a famous destination filled with a range of cultural attractions. You can take a stroll along the promenade followed by a spot of lunch whilst enjoying the beautiful sea views. There are excellent transport links including the Metro line running through town, meaning you can reach Newcastle in approximately 25 minutes.
With a generous choice of schools offering high-quality education, Whitley Bay is ideal if you’re a growing family. Southridge First School is located in the attractive area of Beaumont Park, and has received “outstanding” in a recent Ofsted report. Monkseaton High School and Whitley Bay School, which have also been branded as “outstanding”, provide excellent secondary education. Intimate restaurants serving a variety of cuisines are easy to find in Whitley Bay. Located right on the seafront, Hinnies is a popular choice amongst the locals and offers Geordie-influenced classic dishes. A short walking distance away is Elder and Wolf which is known for its award-winning kebabs and woodfired tacos. On a sunny day, make sure you try Di Meo’s for some homemade gelato!
Whitley Bay offers a range of fun activities and local attractions for a family day out. The Whitley Bay beach stretches two miles long and provides walking access to St Mary's Island to visit the Victorian lighthouse when the tide is out. Located on the outskirts is Wet 'n' Wild, a recently refurbished water park. Home to the local ice hockey team the Whitley Warriors, there is also Whitley Bay Ice Rink which provides fun for families all year round. The town has undergone various multi-million restoration plans including Whitley Bay Playhouse where you can enjoy a range of family shows and concerts. Spanish City, a grade II listed building, re-opened its doors to the public in July 2018 and is now a popular leisure centre.
The town was originally named Whitley, but was renamed to Whitley Bay in 1901!
