North East Series: Ponteland

North East Series: Ponteland

Here at Jan Forster Estates we’re passionate about the North East, so we’re starting a new blog series showcasing some of the best places to live across the region.

Described as a ‘cosmopolitan town’ by Visit Northumberland, Ponteland is arguably one of the nicest areas to live in the North East. As well as the old village heart, there is an exclusive garden estate, Darras Hall, which is an integral part of the town. The main street in Ponteland and the boulevard on Darras Hall offer boutique shops, delicious restaurants, cocktail bars and traditional pubs. You really are spoilt for choice with every tastebud catered for. You can choose from Indian, Asian fusion, Chinese, Italian or good old English fare at the Blackbird Inn.

Due to its proximity to rural Northumberland, Ponteland also offers stunning scenery. Its name means "island in the Pont", after the River Pont which flows from west to east and joins the River Blyth further downstream. The surrounding rural areas also feature lovely country walks to be had.

Just a 20 minute drive from Newcastle city centre, this town really does offer the best of both worlds. Many people who work in the city actually live in Ponteland and commute. There are also many public transport options, with regular bus and metro services nearby.

If family is your focus, look no further than Ponteland. An array of local primary and secondary schools feature nearby, many with desirable Ofsted ratings. There are also plenty of family friendly activities to choose from. Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens is the perfect choice for animal lovers. With over one hundred species to see, visitors can meet the keepers and learn about their favourite furry friends. Belsay Hall is another great choice for outdoor adventure, with Grecian architecture, a medieval castle and acres of gardens just ready to explore. They even have upcoming events for Halloween and Christmas, so be sure to book in advance!

Although Ponteland is officially no longer a village, due to its growth and residential developments, it remains a community led area which residents are proud of and wish to retain.
